Escaping for a weekend away in London is an idea that many people enjoy. There is so much to see and do with a vibrant night life and fun activities to partake in during the day. We are particularly proud of the capital’s culture with regards to museums, theatre and galleries. Below are some places that are well worth visiting if you are considering a cultured weekend.
The British Museum
Dedicated to human history and the culture of the whole world, this museum has around 8 million works. It is free to enter and is open daily between 10.00am – 17.30 pm. There are also free talks available throughout the day with daily eye opener tours and lunchtime gallery talks. For a fee of £12 there is also an ‘Around the World in 90 Minutes’ tour where you will encounter objects such as the Rosetta Stone.
A modern art gallery which is part of the Tate group, this is the most visited art gallery in the world; with around 4.7 million visitors a year. Even if you only have a passing interest in art, this gallery has to be experienced. It is free to enter the Tate Modern with opening times Sunday – Thursday 10.00am – 18.00, Friday – Saturday 10.00 – 22.00. Whether you are interested in contemporary art or traditional, surrealism or impressionism, the Tate Modern will be a fascinating day out.
What better complement is there to a day at an art gallery or museum than experiencing a show at a performing arts venue? Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake is currently running until 26 January 2014. This modern re-interpretation turned tradition upside down by replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble. When it premiered in 1995 it was a hit, causing much more than a ripple of excitement in the theatre community, and now it is just as unmissable as ever.
